FOR THE DEPARTED 

For the Departed Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed a place of brightness, and refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing and sorrow have fled away.

Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art God and love mankind; and Thy word is truth. Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, unto Thee we ascribe glory, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

Hengellisyys ja usko kaikkivaltiaan Jumalan kaitselmukseen on aina seurannut minua elämässäni – joskus väkevämmin, joskus hienovaraisemmin. Aina olen kuitenkin saattanut luottaa ylempään johdatukseen ja anteeksiantoon. Sävellykseni tekstiksi valikoitui, ikään kuin korkeimman johdatuksessa, panihidan, ortodoksisen hautauspalveluksen suuren ektenian ns. doksologi, eli papin lukema loppusiunaus, jossa rukoillaan Herran armoa ja synninpäästöä edesmenneille kanssakulkijoille. Sanat koskettivat minua syvästi ja läheisesti. Hymnimäisen arkaaisesti alkava laulu johtaa enenevissä määrin rytmillisesti toisteiseen, voimalliseen rukoukseen, päättyen taivaan porttien tuonpuoleisien sfäärien sointeihin. Teos on Kamarikuoro Krysostomosin tilaus ja heille omistettu.

For the Departed Spirituality and faith in the providence of the Almighty God have always followed me in my life – sometimes more strongly, sometimes more subtly. However, I have always been able to trust in higher guidance and forgiveness. The text for my composition was chosen, as if under the highest guidance, from the so-called doxology of the Great Ektenia of the Orthodox funeral service, meaning the final blessing read by the priest, in which we pray for the Lord's grace and forgiveness for the departed fellow humans. The words touched me deeply and personally.

The hymn-like song that begins tenderly leads increasingly into a rhythmic repetitive, powerful prayer, concluding with the harmonies of the heavenly gates of the otherworldly spheres. The work is commissioned by the The Krysostomos Chamber Choir and is dedicated to them.
